The position will be assigned to either 1st 12:00am-8:00am or 3rd shift 4:00pm-12:00am and does not usually rotate between shifts. 8hr work day with paid lunch within a 21 day shift rotation which then repeats. Will be scheduled 2 out of every 3 weekends. No on-call rotation. This is an essential worker.
Some night and/or weekend work may be required to meet the needs of the organization.

Position Summary
Incumbent will train under the guidance of a journey worker who is both a competent Central Steam Plant Operator and licensed Stationary Engineer. The employee will gain experience by acquainting themselves with foundational knowledge of tools, equipment, and materials related to boilers and steam production. Such experience involves familiarity of overall plant safety, boiler feedwater testing and treatment, operation, servicing and repair of high pressure steam boilers, pumps, motors, fuel oil and gas controls, emergency power generators, forced draft systems, safety devices, and electronic computer operated boiler controls.

Within the timeframe of no more than 4 years, the employee is needed to become a fully qualified operator of the Central Steam Plant and be licensed as a 2nd class Stationary Engineer within the GSAPE organization.

Duties/Responsibilities

Duties/Responsibilities
Work toward the goal of becoming a fully qualified central steam plant operator and be licensed as a 2nd class Stationary Engineer within the GSAPE organization.
Percentage of time 50 Duties/Responsibilities
Operate high pressure boilers, adjust/regulate controls commensurate to campus steam requirements while maintaining maximum operating efficiency on a variety of fuels; natural gas, fuel oil, and coal. This is accomplished using installed and portable electronic, pneumatic and computerized monitoring and control systems, and safety devices to insure continual safe and proper operation of boilers and auxiliary equipment.
Percentage of time 30 Duties/Responsibilities
Maintain boiler operating data, official records/logs, relative to Central Steam Plant SOP , state/federal regulations.
Percentage of time 10 Duties/Responsibilities
Perform chemical testing and treatment on condensate return system and boiler feed water.
Percentage of time 5 Duties/Responsibilities
Assist steam equipment mechanic/machinist in making repairs to high pressure boilers and auxiliary equipment through supervision of assigned personnel and direct participation when needed. Assist in boiler and equipment inspections as required, confined space entry, chiller observation.
