The “Lithium Metal Engineer” position is a hands-on role within the fast-growing Lithium R&D team located in Kings Mountain, NC. The successful candidate will join a diverse and passionate team developing new lithium-based products and technologies for Albemarle and its customers.

The successful candidate will spearhead development of stabilized lithium metal anodes for current and future generations of high energy density batteries, targeting cost effective manufacturing and cell level performance/useful life. The position’s primary responsibilities include designing high performance lithium metal anodes and their interfaces by developing metal processing and surface modification techniques to control surface structures and chemistries. Demonstrated knowledge of modifying and characterizing the physiochemical structure of lithium metal and its surface/interface is required. The position requires innovative and hands-on independent laboratory work and collaboration across groups, internally and externally. Success in the position will open career growth opportunities within and outside the R&D team.


  • Practice proper laboratory procedures in compliance with Corporate HS&E policies and maintain a safe lab environment
  • Collaborate with a broad technical team to meet timebound technical milestones and deliverables
  • Build actionable understanding of lithium surface chemistry, structure and physiochemical properties through rational hypothesis-driven experimentation
  • Develop new high performance lithium metal anodes, and the techniques to manufacture them and their interfaces
  • Innovate new methods of lithium metal anode characterization and establish standard analysis procedures for critical performance parameters
  • Create a fundamental understanding of how the anode interfacial chemistry and morphology determines anode performance
  • Innovate new lithium surface modification/coating technologies
  • Conduct battery cell post-mortem analysis to develop mechanistic root cause understanding of metal anode failure modes
  • Collaborate with internal and external partners to demonstrate manufacturability and scalability of new technologies
  • Document experiments, observations and results clearly in both written and electronic formats
  • Proactively share data and collaborate to achieve optimal outcomes
  • Communicate clearly and proactively in formal and informal settings

Required Qualifications

  • A PhD degree in chemistry, materials science, metallurgy, chemical engineering, or related scientific background, including a minimum of 2 years of hands-on experience working with lithium metal and its surface modification
  • Experience with lithium metal in contact with non-aqueous liquid electrolyte formulations, including performance enhancing additives
  • Extensive knowledge of the formation, composition and properties of the solid-electrolyte interface (SEI) on lithium metal
  • Skilled in safely handling air sensitive chemicals
  • Fluent in surface characterization techniques (XPS, Raman, SIMS, FT-IR etc.) and battery electrochemical testing methods
  • Able to set up and optimize testing methodologies, and analyze large amounts of data using statistical concepts and tools.
  • Experience with glovebox operation and battery testing equipment

Desired Competencies

  • Experience with state-of-the-art lithium metal anodes and solid-state electrolytes
  • Industrial experience with inorganic materials synthesis, including laboratory safety considerations
  • Hands-on experience with physical and/or chemical vapor deposition techniques
  • Experience with roll-to-roll assembly or coating processes and/or equipment
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and innovation skills
  • Strong organizational and critical thinking skills. Able to prioritize and manage time effectively.
  • Understanding of statistical analysis and experimental design
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to simplify complexity

Physical Demands

  • Must be able to work in a chemical laboratory and a dry room environment, which requires standing for 50% or more of the time
  • Must have dexterity to handle small, delicate battery components and lab equipment
  • Must be able to physically operate pilot-scale equipment
  • Must be able to lift and carry 15-20 pounds
  • Occasional long-distance and international travel may be required
