Research & Process Safety Specialist

 

Come join UCI’s Research Safety Services Team!  Our Research Safety Services unit provides coordination and support related to EHS regulatory program compliance, loss control, incident management, chemical product evaluation, PPE selection and distribution, regulatory agency support and citation management, and equipment approval for field and laboratory-based research efforts. We develop and implement comprehensive research safety programs in accordance with Federal, State, and local regulations. We strive to provide reliable, innovative, and proactive services to our campus community. The result is a safe and healthy environment with appropriate compliance, protection of assets and efficient execution of business processes.

We are looking for:
A Research & Process Safety Specialist to develop, implement, and monitor environmental and safety programs and policies to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local environmental, health, and safety regulations, and ensure a safe workplace. The position will work closely with the Chemical Hygiene Officer and EH&S School Coordinators to ensure relevant codes and safety design standards are addressed in existing and new research and non-research projects. Will perform laboratory safety inspections in order to identify and evaluate potential hazards in the laboratory. Provide support of UCI’s comprehensive laboratory safety program and chemical safety program. Design written programs and guidance materials summarizing complex regulations for application in a research environment, which include developing and maintaining the Research Process Safety program and related guidance materials, monitor compliance and prevent hazards, and serve as campus subject matter expert. Coordinate and ensure effective execution of hazard and risk assessment studies. Assist departments, faculty, and staff in applying regulations and guidelines to their specific operations and facilities. Participate in campus work groups to address specific safety-related issues.

What You Will Bring to This Position:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Process Safety Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Manufacturing Engineering, Environment Engineering, or related fields related to research or a degree in any other engineering-related discipline and/or equivalent experience/training
  • Minimum 5 years of experience and expertise in the field of Process Safety, Safety Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, Environmental Engineering, or related field, preferably in a research environment
  • Minimum three years safety experience in high hazard industrial safety or process safety
  • Thorough knowledge and skill in applying and interpreting applicable local, state, and federal regulations and related standards and guidelines
  • Professional level knowledge with broad-based laboratory experience in a research environment
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of EH&S fields and related laws & regulations
  • Business acumen and advanced skills to effectively represent the campus to state and federal authorities, and community groups
  • Effective written, verbal communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills to prioritize and manage successful completion of projects within time and budget constraints
  • Proficiency with use of technology and relevant scientific equipment as required
