Ethicon, a member of Johnson & Johnson's Family of Companies, is currently recruiting for a Senior Chemical Engineer, Polymer Materials, who will be located in Raritan, New Jersey.

The Ethicon business offers a broad range of products, platforms and technologies-including sutures, topical skin adhesives, hemostasis products, surgical staplers, trocars, energy devices and synthetic mesh devices-used in a wide variety of open and minimally invasive surgical procedures. Specialties include orthopedics, support for treatment of colorectal and thoracic conditions, women's health conditions, hernias, cancer and obesity. The Ethicon business combines products and services of two market leading legacy companies, both with long histories of medical innovation. Overall Responsibilities

The Senior Chemical Engineer, a member of the Lifecycle Management Raw Material team within Ethicon Wound Closure, Healing, and Biosurgery R&D, will participate in problem identification and resolution of challenging problems impacting the Division and the Corporation. The Senior Chemical Engineer will seek out and incorporate new ideas into concepts that lead to solutions for new and improvements to existing products and processes.

The Senior Chemical Engineer will:
  • Lead multidisciplinary project teams in the design, development, testing, and manufacturing of surgical sutures, surgical devices, related products, and other novel medical devices, and be able to function as a team member as required.
  • Play a hands-on role in conducting laboratory-based development activities, analyze and interpret performance and analytical data to guide product and process optimization, document research activities in accordance with design control requirements, and conduct all required research activities associated with development of new materials, components, raw materials, and processes for wound closure devices.
  • Collaborate with team members on chemical synthesis experiments including polymerizations and other polymer processing activities.
  • Assist team in the operation and maintenance of polymer synthesis and processing equipment in a chemical pilot plant.
  • Effectively apply their state-of-the-art scientific technical acumen and technical leadership capabilities to conduct research toward design of new products, as well as supporting and improving (lifecycle management of) existing product offerings.
  • Contribute inventions, new designs, new processes and techniques to solve technical problems based on customer needs.
  • Be a creative, hands-on engineer needed to design and develop new medical devices from concept through product launch and be capable to handle multiple projects and tasks simultaneously.
  • Incorporate manufacturability into your research to partner with manufacturing in the scale-up of R&D concepts and processes to full production scale.
  • Interact with outside vendors and academia to bring state-of-the-art technologies, techniques, processes, and equipment in-house.
  • Collaborate and provide technical support to cross-functional/multidisciplinary teams, such as Clinical, Regulatory, Quality, Manufacturing, etc. to ensure activities toward new product development or existing product/process changes result in reliable devices to fulfill clinical needs within regulatory requirements.


Qualifications

Education & Required Experience:
  • A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Engineering, Materials Science, Polymer Science & Engineering or related field is required.
  • A minimum of four (4) years of experience in an industrial environment (through internships or full-time position) as a technical contributor with a B.S. degree OR two (2) years of industrial experience with a M.S. degree OR a Ph.D. degree is required.
  • An advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) is preferred.
  • Knowledge of and experience in applying scientific principles, analytical techniques and judgment to independently resolve technical issues and establish new methods, controls & procedures

Preferred Skills & Experience:
  • Adept, hands-on experimentalist with experience in chemical/polymeric formulation development at the laboratory scale,
  • Process scale-up and development of launch of products with preferred areas of expertise to include bioabsorbable/resorbable polymers, polyester synthesis, adhesives, sealants, films, and coatings.
  • Knowledge of polymer chemistry and physics, with demonstrated understanding of material characterization, structure-property relationships, formulation development and processing and utilization towards application development
  • Specific experience in polymer synthesis and processing
  • Scale-up and pilot-plant experience
  • Experience working with vendors, customers, and cross-functional teams
  • Broad knowledge of medical device product development and working knowledge of polymeric materials and their application in medical devices, including familiarity with regulations and requirements for the development of implantable medical devices

Other:
  • This position is based in Ethicon, Raritan (NJ) and may require up to 10% (primarily domestic) travel as business needs arise. The ability to travel domestically and internationally is required.


The anticipated base pay range for this position is [$83,500] to [$130,500].

The Company maintains highly competitive, performance-based compensation programs. Under current guidelines, this position is eligible for an annual performance bonus in accordance with the terms of the applicable plan. The annual performance bonus is a cash bonus intended to provide an incentive to achieve annual targeted results by rewarding for individual and the corporation's performance over a calendar/ performance year. Bonuses are awarded at the Company's discretion on an individual basis.
