Position Overview
CGA is seeking a Director of Technical and Regulatory Affairs to lead and oversee the organization’s technical and regulatory strategy, ensuring compliance with our mission and strategic plan. In this role you will be a member of the leadership team and responsible for managing technical programs, directing regulatory engagements, and providing leadership to a team of technical managers. This role is pivotal in shaping the development and direction of CGA’s domestic and international technical strategy.
The ideal candidate will bring industry-related technical expertise, regulatory experience, and exceptional people skills to manage teams and build strategic relationships with regulators and industry stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Planning: Provide strategic direction and oversight for CGA’s technical committees and publication program, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and industry needs. Develop and implement a strategy for CGA’s engagement with external codes and standards organizations, regulatory agencies, and other stakeholders to support CGA goals and priorities.
Technical Leadership: Provide direct supervision, mentorship, and strategic guidance to a high-performing team of Technical Managers who provide direct support for CGA committees. Provide oversight for the technical aspects of CGA committees, technical publications, and regulatory correspondence ensuring consistency, quality, and alignment with CGA’s mission and goals. In conjunction with global partners, direct the strategic development and implementation of the industry’s harmonization program; serve as CGA’s technical liaison to the International Harmonization Council (IHC).
Regulatory Strategy and Advocacy: Develop and implement strategies to build and maintain strong relationships with key U.S. and Canadian regulatory agencies, including developing objectives and priorities for CGA’s regulatory agenda. Research, analyze, and monitor proposed regulations at the federal, state, and provincial levels. Prepare regulatory analyses, issue briefs, and other resources needed to communicate regulatory issues. Lead CGA’s participation in external codes and standards organizations, including NFPA, ICC, ISO, UN, and others.
Stakeholder Engagement: Develop and maintain effective relationships with related industry associations and stakeholders in North America and internationally. Represent CGA in industry forums, conferences, and meetings to advocate for member interests and build consensus.
Requirements
Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s degree in engineering, science, or a related technical field from an accredited institution.
Experience: Minimum of 15 years of experience in the industrial, medical, and food gases industry.
Location & Travel: This position will be a hybrid position requiring in-person attendance at CGA’s headquarters in McLean, Virginia approximately one week per month. Overall travel is approximately 25% of the time.
Leadership: Strong leadership and team-building skills with the ability to inspire and manage teams of internal and external team members and partners.
Communication: Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical issues to diverse audiences.
Problem-Solving and Consensus Building: Effective problem-solving, influencing, and negotiating skills with the ability to drive consensus in collaborative environments where conflicting views are present. Experience participating in international forums and managing competing priorities under pressure, often in the face of heightened emotions.
Strategic Vision: Ability to thing strategically and implement long-term plans to advance organizational goals and industry priorities. Navigate complex policy landscapes.
