Description

Senior R&D (Consumer Products) – At Polyform, we live and breathe creativity, and as the leader of Polyform’s Research & Development team, you will have the opportunity to unleash your creativity through our products.   Our brands are loved and respected by artists and crafters from all over the world, and your goal is to build on our existing portfolio of innovative and high-quality products! 

General duties include:

  • Planning, organizing, and directing complex research and development projects, analyzing results, and providing recommendations based on findings.
  • Performing exploratory research on new concepts and existing products including the use of alternative polymers, pigments, and other raw materials.
  • Partnering with Marketing to test competitive products and develop new products using out-of-the-box thinking that will revolutionize the clay market.
  • Leading the development and commercialization of new products including feasibility studies to determine product viability.
  • Developing annual lab budget.
  • Establishing and implementing new or improved laboratory techniques and processes.
  • Directing team in the performance of their duties and responsibilities including oversight for hiring, training, performance evaluations and goal setting.
  • Improving existing formulations and manufacturing processes to improve product performance and reduce cost.
  • Serving as the champion of clay quality, investigating or troubleshooting clay issues, both consumer and in manufacturing.
  • Developing and validating quality test methods using a data-driven approach.
  • Ensuring quality standards are achieved by testing incoming raw materials and production goods at various stages of completion.
  • Preparing lab batch samples for testing, meetings and trade shows.
  • Leading all regulatory and compliance efforts including testing of new and current products, maintaining Safety Data Sheets, etc.
  • Participating in Technical Task Force meetings to improve processes and product manufacturing, contributing to team brainstorming sessions, and serving as an active member of the Safety Committee.
  • Working on cross-functional teams alongside Manufacturing, Marketing, Supply Chain, and Sales.
  • Developing and managing relationships with vendors.
  • Staying on top of advances in the plastics market and art material regulations impacting the company, reporting back to management as necessary.

Requirements include:

  • B.S. in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, or related field. PhD degree candidates are overqualified for the position.
  • Minimum ten years experience, preferably within the plastics, adhesives or paint industries.
  • Demonstrated ability to share knowledge, collaborate cross-functionally and work toward common goals.
  • Experience with the product development cycle, ideally in a consumer products organization.
  • Proven accomplishments within new product formulation enhancement.
  • A desire to stay at the forefront of relevant new technologies.
  • Experience with patent filings, regulatory filings, and U.S. and foreign labeling requirements.
  • Strong computer, analytical and communication skills.
  • Must be local to the Chicago area.
  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S. (Visa sponsorship not available).
