Hexcel is currently seeking a Research Engineer II  for our Salt Lake City, UT, USA location.

The selected individual will be responsible for but not limited to the following obligations:

  • Lead the development of material models of Hexcel resin and composite systems to simulate thermo-chemical and thermo-mechanical behavior typically seen during processing of prepreg composite materials.

  • Capable of running cure and rheology characterization of thermoset and thermoplastic material systems

  • Perform curve fitting and data analytics on experimental data

  • Work towards gaining expertise in developing new models for novel Hexcel systems based on the advances in processing methods- liaise with the product development activities.

  • Develop, implement and document experimental techniques of composite material characterization for material modeling needs

  • Generate scientific and technical reports and presentation for internal or external dissemination.

  • Support primary structure programs for Material Science activities - to provide guidance on physical, thermal, chemical and mechanical aspects of polymer systems.

  • Develop scripting methods in support of Material Science projects.

  • Acquisition of new scientific learning/equipment/external collaboration to keep Material Science capabilities on par.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree (B.S) in Chemical/Mechanical Engineering, Materials/Polymer Science and Engineering, or related field from a four-year college or university and 7+ years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience (Masters/PhD desirable and preferred)

  • Software skills: One or more of MATLAB/Python/C/C++/Fortran, some experience in CAD: Solidworks knowledge is preferred, Statistics: MiniTAB or equivalent, Data Analytics tools/algorithms

  • Expertise in Polymer science

  • Proficient in model fitting of experimental data

  • Excellent understanding in the area of thermo-chemical behavior of composites/processing of thermosets and thermoplastics

  • Excellent communication skills and a collaborative approach

  • Working knowledge of Finite Element tools (desirable)
