Description

ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING TENURE-TRACK FACULTY POSITION -
The Civil & Environmental Engineering (CE/ENVE) Department at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo invites applications for a full-time, academic year, tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level in Environmental Engineering. Candidates with diverse teaching and research interests are encouraged to apply. The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate how their background addresses contemporary environmental engineering concerns related to bioremediation, resource recovery, and/or solid/hazardous waste. Rank and salary are commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The position is available starting Fall 2023.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to: (a) teaching undergraduate classes and laboratories in environmental engineering in general as well as graduate courses in an area of specialization. The ability to teach courses in more than one sub-specialty (bioremediation, solid/hazardous waste, as well as engineering fundamentals such as thermodynamics or mass transfer and environmental chemistry) is preferred; (b) supervising undergraduate and graduate (Masters)-level research; (c) developing and maintaining externally-funded research programs; (d) collaborating with other faculty on curricular, research and professional development interests; (e) engaging in activities related to service in the form of student club advising, curriculum development, and shared governance.

The Cal Poly College of Engineering strongly values diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), especially in the classroom and among its areas of study. This position is part of a college-wide cluster of searches designed to promote inclusive and equity-minded teaching strategies as well as increase curricular coverage of the intersection of engineering and computing with societal challenges, particularly around DEI issues. Successful candidates will be expected to contribute to the college’s goals in these areas.

The cluster hire searches are for positions in the following disciplines:

· Computer Science/ Software Engineering

· Electrical Engineering

· Environmental Engineering

· Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

· Materials Engineering

· Mechanical Engineering

In addition to the standard new faculty support, candidates selected through this DEI cluster hire will be given additional start-up funds to support their work in DEI. Once hired, candidates will collaborate with their dean and others to develop a plan for utilizing these funds.

Requirements

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates for the position are required to have earned undergraduate and doctorate degrees in Environmental Engineering, Chemical/Biochemical Engineering, or a closely-related field by appointment start date. Experience in environmental engineering, supported by a record of scholarly publications, is preferred. Professional registration and industry/consulting experience are desirable. A commitment to innovation in undergraduate teaching and working in a multidisciplinary and collaborative setting is expected.

The ideal candidate will show evidence of attention to issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion across their teaching, scholarship, and service.

Applicants must submit a diversity statement that focuses on evidence of the applicant’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, and a description of how you will demonstrate a commitment in these areas in teaching, research, and/or service at Cal Poly. Potential topics may include but are not limited to: implementing inclusive classroom environments, the intersection of DEI in your research/scholarship, mentoring students with diverse backgrounds, outreach to under-represented student populations, implementing bias mitigation and previous professional development in diversity and inclusion topics.

PREFERED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience in environmental engineering, supported by a record of scholarly publications, is preferred. Professional registration, LEED certification, and industry/consulting experience are desirable. Candidates with significant experience in working with underrepresented students in research, teaching, service, advising, mentoring or community engagement are preferred.

Cal Poly welcomes and encourages diversity. We seek applicants and nominations from those who have experience teaching, mentoring, and developing research in ways that effectively address individuals from historically underrepresented backgrounds. The University seeks to recruit and retain a diverse workforce as a reflection of our commitment to serve the people of California, to maintain the excellence of the University, and to offer our students richly varied disciplines, perspectives, and ways of knowing and learning. Cal Poly is an affirmative action/equal opportunity employer.
