POSITION SUMMARY
The Project Engineer supports project execution by managing documentation, tracking quantities and costs, coordinating materials, and assisting with schedule and budget control. This role provides a critical link between field operations and project management by maintaining accurate records, ensuring timely procurement, and proactively addressing issues that affect cost and schedule. The Project Engineer works closely with Project Managers, Superintendents, and Foremen to support contract administration, field decision-making, and overall project performance.
YOUR ROLE
- Prepares and manages RFIs, submittals, change orders, pay estimate documentation, and project correspondence.
- Maintains job files, drawing logs, latest plan sets, and project documentation in digital repositories.
- Records and organizes redlines, as-builts, delays, and quantity adjustments throughout the project lifecycle.
- Tracks subcontractor documentation including insurance, compliance records, invoices, and closeout materials.
- Performs quantity tracking, cost control analysis, and production monitoring using HCSS, HeavyJob, Excel, and project schedules.
- Assists the Project Manager in updating weekly schedules with field feedback and milestone progress.
- Supports budget review and project turnover meetings during preconstruction.
- Provides accurate data for revenue projections and lessons-learned documentation at project completion.
- Issues purchase orders with correct job codes, pay items, and quantities; ensures ticket accuracy and vendor compliance.
- Coordinates material orders for asphalt, concrete, base, aggregates, and utilities based on production schedules.
- Serves as the primary point of contact for material suppliers and a secondary contact for subcontractors.
- Ensures all orders are placed with approved vendors and coded correctly for cost tracking.
- Conducts regular site visits to verify quantities, track production, gather as-built data, and support field teams.
- Coordinates utility locates, Dig-Tess tickets, permits, and municipal documentation requirements.
- Supports Foremen and Superintendents by troubleshooting documentation, material shortages, plan discrepancies, and schedule impacts.
- Communicates with owners through email, Primelink, submittal portals, and written correspondence per contract requirements.
- Ensures compliance with project specifications and project-specific contractual obligations.
- Assists with traffic control submittals, ROW permits, SWPPP documentation, and municipal coordination.
- Prepares and organizes project closeout materials including as-builts, final quantities, retainage tracking, material certifications, and subcontractor closeout packages.
- Supports punch list coordination and documentation as assigned by the Project Manager or Division Manager.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
WHAT YOU BRING
- Bachelor of Science degree required (Construction Science/Management or Civil Engineering preferred).
- 1–3 years of construction or infrastructure project experience preferred
- Experience with Microsoft Office, HCSS, HeavyJob, Bluebeam, Spectrum, Primavera/Primelink, and TxDOT Site Manager preferred.
- Ability to read and interpret civil plans, specifications, utility drawings, and TxDOT standards.
- Strong communication skills across internal teams, owners, inspectors, and vendors.
- Detail-oriented, reliable, and capable of managing multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Valid Texas driver’s license required.
- Spanish/English bilingual preferred.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The Project Engineer performs both office and field duties, requiring regular walking, standing, sitting, and the ability to navigate active construction sites with uneven terrain and outdoor conditions. The role requires sufficient visual acuity to review plans and digital documents and frequent use of hands and fingers to operate computers and mobile devices. Occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds may be necessary. When on-site, the employee must wear appropriate PPE and be physically able to access work areas, climb steps or temporary structures, and remain aware of site hazards at all times.
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
Must be willing to travel within the State of Texas as needed, overnight or out of town stay may be required.
