Company Profile

Company History

Virent was founded in 2002 by Dr. Randy D. Cortright and Professor James Dumesic. Virent was incorporated in 2004. In December of 2004, we moved into our local facility on Anderson St. in Madison, WI

Virent made its ground-breaking discoveries in 2006 and is rapidly advancing its innovative BioForming® technology platform for the production of high performance, environmentally superior biofuels.

Virent is commercializing the production of biogasoline and has started a research and development program to convert plant sugars directly into diesel. The company is also investigating deconstruction technologies to break down cellulosic biomass into cost-effective sugars for further processing into biofuels.

Virent has received significant commercial interest and counts Cargill, Shell, and Honda among its leading investors. The company has entered into key strategic industrial collaborations, including with Royal Dutch Shell for the development and commercialization of biogasoline and diesel production from plant sugars. This collaboration is accelerating the technology’s time to market and provides avenues for broad commercial penetration.
