Company History

Our story is about the fusing, over time, of the culture and capabilities of several great fragrance and flavour houses.

Leon Givaudan – later joined by his brother Xavier – established a perfumery company in Zürich in 1895. Three years later, when the company moved to Vernier near Geneva they could not have imagined that one day it would be the headquarters of today's world leader in the fragrance and flavour industry.

Through the merger with Roure in the late 1980s, our history can be traced back to 1796, making us the first company to establish itself as a creator of tastes and scents.

The Roure Company established in 1820 in Grasse, France, developed and produced aromatic plants, and provided its clients with essential oils such as jasmine and rose. A century later, Roure secured the services of talented perfumers and began creating its own compositions, introducing 'Shocking' in 1935, one of the first French designer fragrances. Louis Roure (above right), head of the Company from 1898 until his death in 1947, was a visionary in organic chemistry, convinced of its potential in the development of perfumes. Our renowned Perfumery School was founded under the guidance of Roure perfumer Jean Carles in 1946 and still operates today on the outskirts of Paris.

In 2007, through the acquisition of Quest International – a creative, global producer of flavours and fragrances founded in the Netherlands in 1905 – we consolidated our market leadership and extended our global reach further than any competitor.

Three renowned flavour and fragrance houses – Givaudan, Roure and Quest International – are the foundation of Givaudan's success and leadership today.
