Solazyme, Inc. is the leading renewable oil and bioproducts company. The company uses algal biotechnology to renewably produce clean fuels, chemicals, foods and health science products. Solazyme's advanced and proprietary technology uses algae to produce oils and biomaterials in standard fermentation facilities quickly, cleanly, cost effectively, and at large scale.

These natural oils and biomaterials are tailored, not only for fuel production, but also as replacements for fossil-derived petroleum and a variety of natural plant oils and compounds. This makes them useful in a wide range of products, from oleochemicals, to cosmetics, to foods.

Company History

Founded in 2003 and headquartered in South San Francisco, Solazyme’s unique technology allows algae to produce oil and biomaterials in standard fermentation facilities quickly, efficiently and at large scale.

These natural oils and biomaterials are tailored not only for fuel production, but also as replacements for fossil-derived petroleum and a variety of natural plant oils and compounds, making them useful in a wide range of products: from oleochemicals, to cosmetics, to foods. Solazyme’s oils and fuels provide compelling solutions to increasingly complex issues of fuel scarcity, energy security and environmental impact while fitting cleanly into the pre-existing multi-trillion dollar fuel infrastructure.

Solazyme’s investors among others include Braemar Energy Ventures, Harris & Harris Group, Lightspeed Venture Partners, The Roda Group, and VantagePoint Venture Partners, and investors from strategic industry partners in key target markets.

Solazyme offers our employees and eligible family members a choice of medical plans with either health maintenance organizations (HMO) or preferred provider organizations (PPO). We offer extensive coverage under both types of medical plans.

Eligible employees are also provided with international health insurance.
Dental -Solazyme is committed to helping employees pay for the cost of dental care. Our plans provide coverage to employees & eligible family members for preventive, basic, restorative, and child orthodontia services at varying levels.
Vision -Solazyme is contracted with two of the largest nationwide vision care providers in order to offer high quality coverage to our employees & eligible family members.
Well Being Life + Accident
Insurance Solazyme is dedicated to helping our employees provide financial security for their survivors in case of their death. All eligible employees of Solazyme are offered a life and accidental death & dismemberment (AD&D) insurance benefit of two times their annual salary to a maximum of $1,000,000.
Voluntary Insurance + Legal Plans Solazyme employees are offered a suite of high-impact services such as Long-Term Care Insurance, Pet Insurance, Auto and Home Insurance, and Group Legal Services through MetLife.
Supplemental Insurance Plans -Solazyme employees can take advantage of Aflac’s supplemental insurance on a pre-tax basis to cover out-of-pocket medical expenses, non-medical costs, and loss of income.
Disability Income Protection -Solazyme offers short term and long term disability programs to assist employees who are unable to work due to illness, injury, or pregnancy. These plans provide for the employee to receive a portion of their income while they are recovering or unable to work.
Tax Savings

Solazyme offers flexible spending accounts (FSA) that allow employees to pay for eligible health & dependent care expenses pre-taxed. Flexible spending accounts enable employees to reduce their tax expense and have more disposable income.

Solazyme offers commuter benefits through WageWorks. Employees pay for commuting costs, such as parking and public transit, with pre-tax dollars and can put as much as 40% of routine commuting expenses back into their pocket.
Retirement Savings Plan - Solazyme offers a 401K retirement saving plan supported by investment advisors from Morgan Stanley. All qualified employees of Solazyme are eligible to participate in our 401K.
Vacation -Solazyme employees are eligible and encouraged to play as hard as they work during paid, personal time off (PTO) to be used for vacations, personal, or sick leave. All full time employees of Solazyme will accrue PTO at the minimum rate of 20 days per year. Maximum accrual & carryover of PTO is based on years of service.
Holidays -Solazyme’s holiday schedule currently consists of nine paid holidays. Regular full-time and regular part-time employees are eligible for all paid holidays.
Wellness Program -Stay fit or get fit with the team! Solazyme will reimburse employees up to $600 per year for a gym membership. Employees also have the option of working out on-site in the Cardio Room.
Employee Assistance Program -Solazyme’s Employee Assistance Program provides employees with confidential counseling and referral services for alcohol & drug abuse, child & elder care resources, emotional & stress-related concerns, financial & credit consultation, and family & relationship problems.
