Company Overview
OPX Biotechnologies is a Boulder, Colorado based company using its proprietary EDGE™ microbe engineering technology platform to manufacture renewable bio-based chemicals and fuels that are lower cost, higher return, and more sustainable than existing petro-based products. With unprecedented speed and capital efficiency, in just 18 months OPXBIO has developed and successfully piloted the bioprocess to produce its first renewable chemical product – BioAcrylic – at 30-50% lower cost and a 75% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to current petro-based acrylic. OPXBIO will be the first company to sell BioAcrylic for direct replacement of petro-acrylic in the existing $8 billion global market with applications in diapers, detergents, paints, and adhesives.
In March 2011, OPXBIO reached agreement with The Dow Chemical Company to jointly develop the industrial-scale process for BioAcrylic. BioAcrylic will advance to large-scale demonstration in 2011-2012 with startup of the world’s first BioAcrylic commercial plant anticipated in 2014-2016.
OPXBIO’s proprietary EDGE (Efficiency Directed Genome Engineering) technology platform enables rapid design and construction of high-performance microbes for low-cost bioprocesses. The EDGE platform is versatile – for example, the microbe designs for BioAcrylic can be leveraged into new microbes for production of additional chemicals and fuels from a wide range of renewable feedstocks. OPXBIO has already demonstrated lab scale production of its second product – fatty acid from syngas feedstock for chemical and fuel applications. A $6 million award from the US DOE ARPA-E agency supports this development.
Company History
OPXBIO was founded in 2007 and currently employs over 50 people. The company completed its latest financing in June 2011, raising $36.5 million from venture capital investors Mohr Davidow Ventures, US Renewables Group, Braemar Energy Ventures, Altira Group, DBL Investors, and X/Seed Capital.
