Company History

The path through history, from a machinery laboratory at the Polytechnic in Munich to becoming a global player: during more than 125 years of history there have been decisions, events and particular circumstances that have boosted the development of Linde AG, again and again. Here you will find more about this.

Brewers were first customers and partners. In 1840, many continental European breweries switched to bottomfermented lager production (in contrast to the "English" top-fermented brown beers or ales) because the beer remained fresh longer and customers preferred the taste.

Maschinenfabrik Sürth und G.H. Walb & Co. was first production subsidiary - as far as manufacturing for plant construction in Höllriegelskreuth - came to the Linde Company in 1920: Maschinenfabrik Sürth near Cologne.

Carl von Linde founds Linde Air Products. Carl von Linde had systematically promoted the internationalization of his business even before the founding of the "Gesellschaft für Linde Eismaschinen" with the sale of patent rights and the founding of subsidiary and partner companies.

The gradual takeover of Güldner Motoren-Gesellschaft mbH in Aschaffenburg by 1929 caused a major change in the Linde Company: It helped the engineering company to grow into a major machine builder, which started out in the 1960s to garner the world market for industrial trucks, especially forklifts.

Seeking new products to offset the stagnating demand for tractors, the Güldner Motoren-Gesellschaft took over the hydrostatics operations of the Saalmann company in the mid-1950s, including all employees working in that area.

AGA becomes a strong partner for Linde. As a formerly diversified technology company with an exceptionally gifted entrepreneur-engineer at its head, the "Aktiebolag Gasaccumulator" company, or AGA for short, made an ideal partner for Linde AG.

Linde takes over the BOC Group In March 2006, Linde made an offer to take over the BOC Group. This was ratified by the European Comission in June, and completed in July 2006.
